Marie Kondo has a new Netflix Series

Sparking Joy with Marie Kondo. Marie Kondo ist vor Bäumen und Sträuchern abgebildet. Sie lächelt.

At first, I couldn't picture much about the announcement of the new series. Previously, "Tidying up with Marie Kondo" was only about living spaces, houses and apartments. Now it's expanding to include companies/people's projects and their communities.

In a so-called tidying-up festival, people take all their things in their hands and decide whether they want them to stay in their lives. In this way, they process all the things around them and it shows what changes for them as a result. Now the show's topic is expanding, it's (also) about people's companies/projects and their communities. Unfortunately, only three episodes have been released so far, I hope there will be more, but nothing has been announced yet. (Update: It stayed at three episodes.) The title “Sparking Joy with Marie Kondo” is clear, because Joy from "Spark Joy". "Spark Joy" is THE important rule for things in our lives that the KonMari® method recommends. If things don't bring you joy, then... get rid of them. Of course, it's not quite that simple (well sometimes it is)! Happiness and Joy with Marie Kondo, yes, there have been better titles.

I love the calmness, positive and slow pace, which brings me less stress compared to series like "The Home Edit". I like the dynamics that unfold between people, people opening up more, talking to each other, bumping into things, negotiating what they want to do. I like Marie Kondo's interpreter Marie Iida (although she's not in all the episodes). So my first conclusion: I like it a lot, more of it! It's cool to see how KonMari® can work in a small garden center, for example, and also with the handicrafts of a church congregation, to which many people should have quick access.

What's it about?

Family-owned garden center, café owner with family, former school headmaster and single mother who does a lot of voluntary work are roughly the three scenarios. For the first time, this is not just about people's homes, like the book "Joy at Work". Together with Marie Kondo and her team, people find better structures for their work and feel more comfortable where they usually spend a large part of the day. In the café, for example, the team finds a new shared structure and the frustration of looking for things decreases.

I'm torn every now and then, do I like the stories, am I happy about trans representation (third episode), am I happy that Marie Kondo doesn't just work with white hetero cis middle class families (YES, I am happy about that!) or is part of me also like: we'll give you something touching (families find more to each other again, people had burnout/difficult times or similar, reclaim their living and working spaces) and try to check off "diversity boxes". But somehow it's also very realistic. And I would love to work with all three families/teams, even though I still have zero idea about plants and their needs. Even though I've already had customers with a quite a bit of passion for plants (I guess an outside perspective is always a good thing).

Sparking Joy – worth watching for you?

For example, if you want to be inspired to think about taking a closer look at the things and processes around you using the KonMari® method. In your home, at your place(s) of work, places that you manage (together with others). Of course, it is also simply " feel-good content", something peaceful to feel good, to watch in a relaxed way. It can also give you a good feeling to observe how others tidy things up. But even if you haven't planned to do this up until now, maybe it will make you want to? If that's the case, then feel free to reach out!

You can always watch the earlier episodes of the first series !

That's it from me, take a look.
